Job Search Made Easy: How to Identify the Right Employer for You with These Simple Tools

Oct 8 / Thomas Bartelsen

Identify the right cultural fit for you with kununu

Cultural fit is as important as the job when finding the right employer. That's where kununu comes in. This platform allows you to research companies and understand their culture, values, and employee satisfaction. You can read reviews from current and former employees and see ratings for things like work-life balance and management. This information lets you better determine if a company aligns with your values and work style. Once you have a list of potential employers, you can use the Chamber of Commerce to find even more options. And when it comes to deciding where to live, cost of living analytics can help you narrow down your choices. Your shortlist lets you focus on where you'll get the most out of your job and life. And when it comes time to apply, many of these companies will have job listings on their website. With these simple tools, finding the right employer has always been challenging.

Fortunately, there is a list already provided for you. It´s a fantastic option to prefilter companies that fit your needs. Remember that your browser auto-translates if you select this —for example, Safari or Chrome offer such opportunities.

Claudio checks out kununu for his first shortlist and sorts them by the overall promoter score.

Therefore, he uses these filters to identify the best companies for him.

Now why is this valuable for you? You literally use the "swarm intelligence here" and according to kununu only 5% of companies are awarded that title. See the criteria here

Now, he received 59 companies. Wow! So, he decided to narrow it down a bit more. He prefers southern Germany. Specifically, Bavaria because of its proximity to Milan, where he's from. Therefore, he narrows it down to Bavaria and is down to ten companies.

Yet Claudio believes there is more, and as any good research assistant he knows, more than double-checking is needed as one source is required.

Find all relevant employers with the chamber of commerce

Another great tool to find the right employer for you is the Chamber of Commerce. This resource can help you identify all the relevant employers in your desired industry and location.
Using the chamber of commerce, you can access a wealth of information about local businesses, including their size, industry, and culture. This information can help you narrow your search and find the right cultural fit. Once you have identified the right employers, you can use cost of living analytics to narrow down the places you want to live. With your shortlist on autopilot, you can apply for relevant jobs on their website and get one step closer to finding your dream job.
Now, Claudio wants to see if he needs to include anything significant. So he uses the company research tool by IHK. The IHK (Industrie- und Handelskammer) is a German chamber of commerce and industry that supports businesses by providing various services such as vocational training, professional certifications and representing the business community's interests. As Germany is a federal state in his case, there are two research tools—one for each federal state. We´ll use the one for Baden-Würrtemberg in this case.

He looks for chemical companies with 200-1000 employees and gets a list of all relevant companies.
And there he goes - he entered start search and got his longlist of potential companies - for free and directly at his disposal to check out.

Narrow down the places where you want to live with the cost of living Analytics

Fantastic, Claudio lists some companies he'd like to work for and lists them in a table to check them out.

Once you have identified the right cultural fit for you and found all relevant employers through the chamber of commerce, the next step is to narrow down the places where you want to live with the cost of living analytics. This is crucial to ensure you can afford to live in the city where you will be working. Cost of living analytics will help you to compare the cost of living in different cities, including housing, transportation, food, and other expenses. This information will help you to make an informed decision about where to live and work. By narrowing down your choices based on the cost of living, you can ensure that you get the most out of your buck and avoid financial stress. Once you have your shortlist, you can apply for relevant jobs on their website and prepare to start your new career in the city of your choice.

There is a plethora of ways to do it. One easy way could be Numbeo. Claudio would only be a good research assistant if he quickly checked the cost of living up front. He reads up on this topic via Google and finds Numbeo. He uses it to benchmark the cities against each other.

When he looks at these figures, he realizes Munich is too expensive for him - except for the case that a company would pay him adequately more. He checks on Stuttgart vs. Augsburg and acknowledges the same. So his preferred city is Augsburg.
Ultimately, Claudio went for more than just big cities in his research. Still, he reverse-engineered his situation and now knows that there are plenty of relevant companies within southern Germany for this career move and future ones now.

Reduce your commuting time to enhance your quality of life

Now, Claudio wants to check whether he could live in other cities surrounding Augsburg. Therefore, he opens Pendleratlas. This is a commuting dashboard by a federal statistic portal that gives him an idea of where he can look. He realizes that besides Augsburg city, he will check out Königsbrunn, Friedberg, and Neusäß as they´re within 10 km distance and plenty of people do so. Maybe it's a good choice.
When opening it and searching for Augsburg, he realizes that quite a lot of people drive into Augsburg. If he clicks “Auspendlerströme,” he sees plenty of people commuting to Munich from Augsburg. But that's not his decision.

Get your shortlist on autopilot and understand where you get the most out of your buck

Once you have identified the right cultural fit for you with kununu, found all relevant employers with the chamber of commerce, and narrowed down the places where you want to live with the cost of living Analytics, it's time to get your shortlist on autopilot. This means using tools like job search engines and alerts to automatically notify you of new job openings that match your criteria. You can also use salary comparison websites to understand where to get the most out of your buck. By automating your job search, you can save time and energy while being proactive in your search for the right employer. Likewise, you can sign up for their talent pool if they have one and sign up on LinkedIn for their company news. By the last measure, recruiters with a LinkedIn recruiter license will consider you more interested. Once you have your shortlist, it's time to apply for relevant jobs on their website. Remember to tailor your application to each employer and highlight your relevant skills and experience. With these simple tools and strategies, you can make your job search easy and effective.
